That morning, we should have missed the bus,
Spent the day apart. You outside finding trees
Gnarl differently away from home. I, in a room
Now twice its size with you gone, finding space
Is a thing one fills with oneself. You would have found
A lane away from the stares of men, curving
Away from you. A shaded walk, a canopy
Of laced fingers. You would have paused
At the end, unsure of stepping into a sea of light.
I would have found a chair to watch dust fly
Smoked cigarettes into the mouths of cobwebs.
Plotting to cocoon me. You would have returned
With the sun at your back, your hair a web of light
And the dust from roads. I would have seen
Your shadow on the bed. The day would have died
In an empty room and us, away.
(NOTE: The first attempt at anything is never the best. It is known Newton discovered gravity first from pigeons on a branch above him. But, it is a start and can only lead to finer things. So there.)
